IDML- InDesign Markup Language

What is? IDML File Format and How to Open it?

The IDML file format, meant for use with the Creative Suite of applications which comprises InDesign and Illustrator was developed by Adobe Systems. This utility helps one to save, copy, and archive the produced papers utilizing these programs. The shorthand for “InDesign Markup Language” is IDML. Based on XML, this structure keeps data about the style, formatting, and structural integrity of documents.

IDML files are used to save documents in a format that can be accessed and changed in variations of InDesign differing from one another. For example, opening the IDML file with the suitable program allows one to open and edit a document created in InDesign CS5 in InDesign CS6. IDML files are also able to be used for transporting documents between several operating systems since they can be read on both Windows and Mac machines.

Opening an IDML file requires using an application compatible with the IDML file format, say Adobe InDesign. If you do not have InDesign installed on your machine, view the PDF with Adobe Acrobat Reader. Opening the file in a text editor and looking at the XML code housed inside is another choice.

IDML files can be used for exchanging documents between several versions of InDesign in addition to helping to archive materials for future use. Since IDML files are based on XML, they are also easier to read and change than other file formats.
