GML- Geography Markup Language

What is? GML File Format and How to Open it?

Geographic information is stored using this text-based, XML-based file format sometimes known as the GML file format. Geography Markup Language is the name given to a language used for geographic information storage. This data comprises the coordinates of points, lines, and polygons put together for a map or other geographical depiction. It also serves for the storage of properties linked to geographical elements.

The GML file format is based on the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) created Extensible Markup Language (XML) specifications. Designed to be used for the exchange of geographic data between several applications and systems, a portable format free of dependability on any one platform can be used.

Any text editor or XML viewer program will let one open GML files. Several programs including ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, and gvSIG allow opening, viewing, and modification of GML files for additional information. Furthermore, for further study and modification, GML files can be imported into several database systems and geographic information system applications.
