DGN- MicroStation Design File

What is? DGN File Format and How to Open it?

Designed with MicroStation, a CAD tool produced by Bentley Systems, a two- or three-dimensional vector graphic file is A.DGN. Along with aspects of a geographic information system (GIS), like coordinate systems, layers, and geographic features, it comprises a collection of drawing elements—text, lines, arcs, forms, and images. Site plans, maps, construction documentation, and engineering drawings are just a few of the papers one can produce from DGN files.

Usually made of layers, DGN files consist of a set of items. Every element has a symbol and a color that facilitates identification and manipulation of each other. The files also include metadata including coordinates, a drawing’s description, and other details.

MicroStation as well as various other CAD applications let one open DGN files. This covers DraftSight, Vectorworks, AutoCAD, and Solid Edge. DGN files can be exported from some programs including Autodesk’s AutoCAD.

Furthermore, opening DGN files as well as many other CAD formats is the free freeware Open Design Alliance Viewer. Software development kits (SDKs) offered by the Open Design Alliance also enable creators of apps able to read and write DGN files.
